The Jews did not do all that was commanded and those peoples were not
driven out were they? This promise was conditional on obedience that
was found wanting and thus "the surrounding peoples" did not "see the
work of Lord" as was intended.
Note that in Ephesians 6:3 Paul changes the 5th Commandment.
2"Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a
promise— 3"that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long
life on the earth."
Earth? What was the original?
12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in
the land the LORD your God is giving you."
The Jews disobeyed and they forfeited the land that was promised. But
God was faithful, nonetheless. Now, the meek will inherit the whole
Earth.
