The sad thing is that atheist protagonists like Richard Dawkins want to do
this, especially Dawkins who wants to promote the view that evolution leads
naturally to atheism, and demonstrates that there is absolutely no evidence
that God exists. I sometimes wonder if arrogant types like Dawkins are
actually fuelling the YEC backlash.
You are right that the myth that if evolution is true then the bible is
false is propagated. It was pretty much rammed down our throats when a
prominent YEC spokesman (Andy McIntosh) came to preach at our church
recently. As my wife said afterwards, he's putting tremendous stumbling
blocks in the way of faith because he is saying that if you don't accept YEC
you might as well become an atheist. A lot of people in the congregation
were really angered by his sermon & I think the vicar was pretty taken aback
as well. There are a lot of scientists in the congregation, as the church
was founded in 1960 as a result of action and prayer from a group of
scientists from the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell. There
was a lot of protest when people found out that McIntosh had been invited
(not only to preach but give a seminar on Creation Science to the young
people). Mercifully the seminar didn't happen as McIntosh got stuck for 7
hours in a traffic jam on the motorway (does this point to an Intelligent
Designer? ;-). After the sermon, the vicar commented to me that he hadn't
spoken with either grace or humility, (it was more of a harangue than a
sermon) and he definitely wouldn't be invited back to give the cancelled
seminar.
