The liberal/conservative issues aside....

Historically, when martyrs stood there ground against those
in power (who where abusing that power), they stood their
ground on the truth. History has vindicated them because
what they said was basically true.

So at the very minimum, the truth should not be compromised
and made the victim of a one's political agenda, regardless of
the how right he/she may believe his/her cause to be.
