RE: [asa] Resolution affirming Creation and Evolution

Yes, it is agreed that the issue of shifting the burden of the
metaphor ‘evolution’ (i.e. to unroll, unfold, vary, adapt,
differentiate, bifurcate, etc.) to that of ‘emergence’ is somewhat
tricky/difficult.

“‘Emergence’ in the resolution refers to the emergence of new
species over time, though I see that this could be misunderstood.”
              – Robert Schneider

Should we take it then that the term ‘emergence’ is functionally
equivalent to the term ‘origin,’ as used by Darwin – i.e. the ‘origin
of new species over time’?

The issue may also be taken with the notion that there is ‘one’
theory of evolution – called ‘the theory of evolution.’ Pope John
Paul II made it clear that ‘theories of evolution’ is more accurate.
In the Resolution, perhaps ‘evolutionary theory’ should replace ‘the
theory of evolution,’ to avoid this confusion. Otherwise, I find the
Resolution appropriate and welcome.

   A. Peacocke, for example, gave me a wobbly answer this year about
whether or not evolutionary psychology is a legitimate ‘evolutionary
science.’ Likely it is not the proper forum of the American Episcopal
GC to decide this either.

   Resolution A129
   Title: Affirm Creation and Evolution
Resolved, the House of Deputies concurring, That the 75th General
Convention affirm that God is Creator, in accordance with the witness
of Scripture and the ancient Creeds of the Church; and be it further,
Resolved, That the theory of evolution provides a fruitful and
unifying scientific explanation for the emergence of life on earth,
that many theological interpretations of origins can readily embrace
an evolutionary outlook, and that an acceptance of evolution is
entirely compatible with an authentic and living Christian faith; and
be it further Resolved, That Episcopalians strongly encourage state
legislatures and state and local boards of education to establish
standards for science education based on the best available
scientific knowledge as accepted by a consensus of the scientific
community; and be it further Resolved, That Episcopal dioceses and
congregations seek the assistance of scientists and science educators
in understanding what constitutes reliable
  scientific knowledge.
