Mike asked:

Of course, if evolution was directed by God, it could certainly be possible.

Look at it this way: If Man was the ultimate and final creation of God wouldnt you expect God to have created Man with a clean slate? In other words why are there so many defective or inactive sequences in the human genome? Why would God create de novo a genome that is so filled with errors?

Via Ockham's razor, which is more likely, that Man came about after years of evolution that was either directly directed by God, or was the ultimate, yet imperfect result of processes established by God, or is it more likely that God created this new species, in his own image, and included all of these flaws in the genome?

I think that the genetic evidence is clearly convincing that common descent is true. This makes Man a product of evolution and not a special creation. There are certainly theological issues that go along with this, but it also clearly refutes a YEC view.
