Or the listeners recorded what God told them using the styles of narration,
metaphors, treatment of numbers common to their culture. At the risk of
arousing your ire, I would suggest reading "The Origins Solution" by Dick
Fischer, which goes into the Hebrew use of numbers to symbolize more than just
the number of years, objects, etc.
