I can't tell you anything about the species of European oaks. I have been
on the Rhine, but the guide noted castles, not flora. All I can do is
repeat the statement I encountered.
Tree-ring chronologies are floating or anchored. The latter are tied to
the calendar, a specific ring to a specific year. Bristlecone pine
chronologies are anchored because we know the date when a recent tree was
cut down and can count from there, extending the count to fallen trees by
matching sequences. Floating chronologies are internally consistent
counts, but cannot be associated with a specific year.
