I think that so many factors play a role that it is impossible (or
almost so) to make hard and fast conclusions. A child's genetic
pre-dispositions, relationship to parent/s, other caregivers,
cultural background etc etc. Also - are single parents more likely
(in the west) to come from lower income families? If yes, what does
that mean? If not - etc etc.
Its a bit like boarding school. Is it good for a child or not? As a
son of a missionary in a remote area we all had to go to boarding
school. Back then home schooling was unheard of - and anyhow, my
folks wanted us exposed to western culture for the expected eventual
return to the west...and living in a remote village in the middle of
the jungle was not the place to receive such cultural acclimatization.
People often ask me, "Is BS ok? Should I send my child?"
I tell them the question is almost unanswerable. Even in one family
you can have different children with different reactions. I loved it,
one brother tolerated it, another did not do so well.
Human social interactions are so complex as to be almost incomprehensible. :)
