As someone with a wife who got polio the same year Salk vaccinations
were started in Ontario, I think the dangers of not getting vaccinated
are much greater than the dangers of side effects from the vaccinations.
People seem to forget that "You can't do just one thing", there always
are side effects and risk trade offs.
As the son of missionaries, I would say that it is completely fool hardy
not to get inoculations. There are too many other diseases faced by
children in the tropics. At least protect the children from what is
possible! My brother contacted one of the tropical eye diseases and his
sight was severely impacted. The damage was done by out of date
medicine and the fact that no doctor was available, except by mule ride
of 3days and then a plane trip to Addis Ababa. He was impacted by the
loss of sight, to the extent that employment was difficult for him to
find, he wanted to be a draftsman. Of course separation from parents
and abusive boarding schools also damaged him and many of us. He died
about 62, a pathetic, hopeless recluse.
