Apropos of something Phil mentioned a while back, it's interesting that this
link states that Urartu was a well-deliniated kingdom in the area
surrounding Lake Van at the time Moses wrote the Pentatuch. I recently
picked up a really lovely book by Michael Rolf called "The Cultural Atlas of
Mesopotamia" that has a short section on Urartu. The book indicates that
Urartu flourished from the 9th to the 7th centuries BC in the area
described. This would be something like 600 years before Moses presumably
wrote the Pentatuch, and probably at least 2000 years before the flood. So
it does seem that even the assumed identification of this region with Urartu
is unlikely.
