George's last comment on the Social Evolution thread concerning culture evolution being "Lamarckian" made me think of a question that I wanted to post.
What is the current debate on the role that cooperation/symbiosis may have played in driving evolution. I am thinking of Lynn Margulis and James Love. I suspect that the whole Gaia view is still out in left field, but cooperation is a more serious idea. Organisms become more successful by working together. I remember that idea being applied to mitochondria, chloroplasts as well as whole organisms adapting toward each other = bees and flowers...
I suspect the general view is that both cooperation and competition play roles.
