I'm a bit surprised by the claim that this is the first evidence of
dolphins recognizing rhythm. Perhaps this ruled out alternatives
better than previously, but I remember a film in a biology class
almost 15 years ago in which rhythms played to dolphins were repeated
and then repeated with modifications by the dolphins. Unfortunately,
the researchers were only able to play the same thing over and over,
so I think they didn't seem too bright to the dolphins.

They were able to puzzle the dolphins with a wind-up bath toy,
however, which swam like a little fish but didn't respond to a dolphin
sonar blast that would have stunned a real fish.
