Who are "they"? Are we to think that every person (or every person before
hearing torah &/or gospel) in the development his/her individual life has a
true knowledge of God & then deliberately distorts or misinterprets it? I
don't think that's the case & I see no reason to say that that's what Paul
meant. I think it much more likely that he had in mind the origins &
development of humanity, which of course he understood in terms of the early
chapters of Genesis.

& then what characteristics are we talking about? The commonly stated
"attributes" of God have the potential to produce idols if they are not seen
in the context of the cross.
