Priviledged Planet

Last evening I attended the Smithsonian showing of "The Priviledged Planet"
film. Now that I have seen it, I endorse my earlier comments about the
book: they also apply to the film version. The film does offer a religious
interpretation of the universe, but does so IMO no more strongly than Carl
Sagan's "Cosmos" also did (though of course the message is the opposite
one). The film has lots of nice segments, explains lots of really good
science about the solar system, the earth, and the galaxy, and in general is
very well done. I recommend it to all and invite people to offer their own
opinions after they've actually seen it.

The audience included several quite well known people, incl a current
member of Congress, at least one NAS member, and several ASA members. I
won't identify specific persons however since it was a private showing and
the politics of this issue suggest that I leave the event itself as a
private event, I won't "out" anyone here.

In closing, let me remind ASA members that the meeting this summer will
include a 3-hour symposium on ID, featuring both advocates (such as Bill
Dembski) and critics (such as Keith Miller). Richard Sternberg of the
Smithsonian is also expected to speak. I anticipate an excellent session
with lively exchanges of views. I hope to see you all there!
