If the person is really nonscientific, it is going to be very difficult to
convince him with a scientific argument. As you have pointed out, he will
go with the person who claims to be an authority on science and agrees
with the nonscientist's theology. I think that you would have a better
chance by pointing out the difficulties in reconciling with the Bible
some of the apologetics that the YECs have developed. Hopefully this will
carry some weight with him.
