In a previous post, I had commented rather harshly
about the decision of AAAS not to participate in the
kangaroo court. Keith had pointed out that the reason
was because the bill being debated was a minority bill
and not the original bill that was originally discussed.
This point is clearly in mind, but I recently received
the general emailing from Alan Leshner (the CEO for
AAAS)
http://www.aaas.org/news/releases/2005/0412kansas.pdf
He does mention the minority bill issue, but I am still
have some misgivings about this decisions.
I strongly sympathize with the AAAS position,
but in fact, considering this from a Christian
perspective, Christ was handed the ultimate indignity
of having to stand trial in a kangaroo court with the
most unfair bias of any trial imaginable for someone
of that stature. If Christ put up with such nonsense,
then is it not also our own duty to stand up to
falsehood even when the cards are firmly stacked against
us and people have played byzantine games with us?
On top of that, as far as the public is concerned, none
of this point about the skulduggary that went into the
production of this bill really made it into the public
forum. What the John Q Public sees as a result is a
bunch of spoil sports who don't want to attend the party.
The AAAS certainly did not get the proper point across.
If they rejected going to the meeting, it should have
at least been emphasized on the grounds of a fraudulent
bill, but even then, that is the standard operating
procedure of the Creationists.
My sympathies are fully on the side of the AAAS on the
issue, but I still feel it missed the chance to set a
proper example. Moreover, we can expect what the
Creationist and IDs do when its in the AAAS' court.
The AAAS probably has few Christians left, and to some
extent, when I view what some Creationists have done, I
have little reason to blame them. But Socrates also
faced this matter. It's just not the best way to stand
in the face of falsehood, in my humble opinion.
By Grace alone we proceed,
Wayne
