Do any of you know Alan Lechner, apparently connected with AAAS? If so, could you give me a little background and perspective on him? I'm told he's been leading at least some of AAAS's efforts on science and religion.

His name was given to me by Mary Good, former chair of the National Science Board, former Under Secretary of Commerce, and presently Dean of Information Science at U. of Arkansas. I had the privilege of sitting next to her at a dinner at the U of Illinois tonight. She gave a terrific speech on the history and outlook of science and technology in America. (depressing, unfortunately) When she heard about my new job and the goals of ASA, she got all excited and wanted to keep in touch with us. She urged me to contact Alan.

In general, the faculty and dept. heads here were very supportive when I told them of my coming role in the ASA. Though I didn't meet any latent evangelicals, most seemed knowledgeable and interested in issues of religion and science. None were antagonistic. Unfortunately, ASA has virtually no penetration here. Only one staff member and two students at the university are ASA members. We have a huge opportunity in the university system but it will be very difficult to penetrate.
