Not sure what you're saying here. When you say, no it shouldn't be
taken at face value, is it that you are saying the writer is
challenging the validity of Christianity?
I took it that he was comparing intolerant Christians like the first
Smith, with true loving and forgiving Christians, like the second
Smith, who ministered to her captor. Comparing the "niggardliness of
spirit that masquerades in the guise of faith", to true faith - making
pancakes for the man with the gun.
Perhaps I'm being too naive here?
