Gordon's post helped to crystallize what I should have said instead of
my earlier inept comment about the gap theory. It seems to me that the
idea of animal death resulting from the pre-mundane fall of angels could
solve the theodicy problem independently of the infamous "gap" between
vv.1 & 2. I.e., with the revolt of the angels sin has entered
creation, & that sin could be responsible for animal deaths all the way
through the history of terrestrial life up to the creation of
humanity. Of course there is not supposed to be any organic connection
between the fallen angels & animals but for anti-evolutionists there
isn't any organic connection between humans and other animals either.
Thus one could have an old earth with pre-human death & no evolution
but with animal suffering & death before the fall of
humanity "explained."

I offer this for any anti-evolutionists who wish to use it. Needless
to say, I will not be teaching it.

Shalom,
George
