Dear Michael, David, Ted,
Thank you for your responses! They correspond to what had been my own
impression from the little I knew about Templeton.
Thank you especially, Ted, for your kind and thoughtful evaluation of
his character. For me, this attitude implies that the question about
whether to cooperate with people of different theological inclinations,
including non-Christians, must be decided on a case-by-case basis,
depending on on the goals envisaged - politics, charity, science,
teaching, evangelism, theology, marriage, etc. The exhortation "not be
unequally yoked with unbelievers" (2 Cor 6:14) has to be understood in
the context of the closeness and definiteness of yoking, and the
activity implied, Paul specifically warning against "lawlessness" or
"wickedness" and "darkness" in the same verse.
I advised the editor to have the Templeton reference eliminated entirely
from that manuscript. I don't know yet what he has decided about it.
Peter
