--Genesis 30:25-43. Laban agrees that Jacob can take the speckled, spotted, and dark-colored sheep and goats from Laban's flock as payment for his years of work. Jacob puts some pealed branches into watering troughs during breeding time, in a way which he believes will cause the animals which mate there to have speckled, spotted and dark-colored
offspring. Jacob's actions make no sense from a modern scientific perspective. God didn't make Jacob first learn proper genetics, but God did cause Jacob to prosper.
Yes, but the crucial element of the story is that Jacob separates his flocks from Laban's flocks and breeds the more vigorous animals in his own flock while breeding the less vigorous in Laban's. This is correct scientifically. Jacob is breeding Laban's flocks down and his up, I suggest because Laban has tricked him into marrying dull eyed Leah first and caused the patriarch of his next generation to be born of a dull eyed woman! Of course, God fixes that for Jacob. Leah's children fare poorly while Rachel's son excels and the elders server the younger.
