If one were to study nature in the light of Scripture, one would never
be lead to suppose that man is nothing but a machine. Materialistic
metaphysics, which is what many scientists suppose when studying the
whole of nature that includes self, life, etc., may lead to a very
restricted and erroneous description of nature rather than the attitude
I take. In fact, the notion of a Creator seems to me logically
unavoidable but abhorrent to many scientists.

Clearly, this has been what has gotten us into trouble. Nature needs to
stand on its own two feet unimpeded by what we think the Scriptures say.
Otherwise you open it all up to how we interpret Scripture. And no one
interprets the same. Can we impose on nature six 24-hour days of
creation because God says so? What you would get is a blood bath.
