Subject: [TulsaInterfaith] Lecture on "Intelligent Design" Creationism in Tulsa Schools

An Informative Lecture in Support of Science Teaching in the Public Schools

The Tulsa Interfaith Alliance, in keeping with its tradition and goal of support of quality public education, will sponsor, along with the Univ. of Tulsa Dept. of Geoscience and Dept. of Biological Sciences, and the Tulsa Geological Society, an informative lecture and public discussion on the topic:

The Fundamentalist Movement to Place Intelligent Design Creationism in Public Schools.

Thursday, Feb. 10, 7 pm-9 pm. Location: Hall M1. Keplinger Hall ( 1 block W of 5th & Harvard), University of Tulsa.

Speaker will be the distinguished Victor H. Hutchison, Ph.D., George Lynn Cross Research Professor emeritus in the Department of Zoology, University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Hutchison is a leader in efforts to maintain quality science education in Oklahoma and elsewhere, especially with respect to attempts to have creationism taught alongside scientifically based evolutionary theory. He maintains an e-mail service (OKEVOL) on the topic, to subscribe contact vhutchison@ou.edu. An additional resource on the topic is the National Center for Science Education and its website at www.ncseweb.org .

The format of the evening will be:

1. A 45 minute lecture by Dr Hutchison :

Brief history of the evolution/creationism “debate” back to the early 19th century

Recent history and court decisions regarding public education

Oklahoma issues, current and recent past

“Intelligent Design”—what is it and how it differs from earlier “creationism”

The strategy of the “Intelligent Design” movement

Current cases in the news

2. A 45 minute Question & Answer period

This program is intended to educate and inform, but is not a debate or a forum designed to present a variety of viewpoints. In 2000 the Tulsa Interfaith Alliance and the Tulsa Geological Society co-sponsored two public, balanced viewpoint, forums on the topics: Religious Perspectives on Evolution and Science”, and “Views on Science, Theories, and Evolution”. Details of those forums, including extended abstracts of many of the talks, are available on request.

The Tulsa Interfaith Alliance and the University of Tulsa Departments of Geoscience and Bilogical Scieces invite other organizations to join in sponsorship of this informative evening.
