I get the feeling that Dawkins and his ilk tout materialism because of
philosophical naivete. They don't know that materialism is metaphysics
and is neither supported nor denied by empirical evidence. The same
restriction holds for other metaphysical doctrines. This has been
explained to Johnson repeatedly, and other leaders of ID have advanced
degrees in philosophy. So a lack of understanding does not seem to be the
basis for their claims.
