"Maybe they were referring to the Da Vinci Code. There is nothing new
about
this. Jesus's enemies like to invent stories that discredit him."
I did not see the Newsweek article, but I suspect they may have been
referring to the Cathars who still have a church (Christian) in southern
France. Part of the Cathar traditions include a marriage between Jesus
and Mary Magdalene. The Da Vinci Code novel was, of course, partly based
on this.
The Cathars are "famous" also for the holocaust that almost wiped them
out 4 or 5 hundred years ago. It seems the opposing general (of France?)
decided that genocide was the only cure for the Cathar cities. When told
that there were many "good Catholics" also living in those cities, he is
reported to have said, "Kill them all anyway. God will sort them out."
My own Huguenot ancestors (at least one of them) barely escaped the
massacre of 70,000 of us on Aug 24, 1572 at St Bartholomew. We still
have family stories that are passed down,
I am not convinced that the Cathars are "Jesus' enemies." Mistaken,
probably. But even that I am not convinced about. The Bible does not seem
to have anything to say about this. And so I cannot see a "blatant
contradiction" involved.
