        I did not "propose" that ASA take an official stance against the idea of a young
(~ 10^4 years) earth this but hesitantly suggested that it be considered. As I have
noted a couple of times, I see some drawbacks to doing this. Taking such a position
would not, however, mean that YEC would be labelled a theological heresy. It would just
be a statement that it's bad science. The fact that an organization of predominantly
Evangelical scientists took such a stand might carry some weight with conservative
Christians who are considering the issue. & it wouldn't have much effect on ASA
recruiting since most of the people we're trying to reach (the first group I mentioned
in my earlier posts) aren't scientists & aren't eligible for regular membership anyway.
