Although I work for General Motors, what I'm about to say is not
endorsed by GM. My theory is that the popularity of SUV's is due
directly to the efforts on the part of the auto companies to downsize
their passenger cars. Americans are used to big cars, so when the
manufacturers began to downsize their vehicles, people who wanted
"adult-sized cars" switched to trucks.
