    There are smaller-scale modern analogs, resulting in general agreement about a large, evaporative basin setting for their formation, e.g, the Mediterranean during the late Miocene, cut off from the ocean at both ends. However, details such as how much water might still be present (was the deep Mediterranean a very salty sea or a salt flat?) remain uncertain.
