I think it would have looked different 100 years ago. E.g., the idea in
_The Island of Dr. Moreau_ that animals could be modified to become "men" by surgery
was probably plausible enough to be a reasonable "science fiction" premise then. If you
were going to do that today you'd have to use genetic engineering as your premise.
Something that the recent film of that with Marlon Brando & Val Kilmer failed to do -
which is just one reason why it was one of the worst big budget films ever made.
Similarly with _The War of the Worlds_. Now of course we know that there ain't
no Martians. 100 years ago there were respectable scientists who throught there were.
