    I haven't followed this thread closely, but I have found helpful a
    discussion of the history of the doctrine of original sin in the book
    "Evolution & Eden: Balancing Original Sin and Contemporary Science" by
    Jerry D. Korsmeyer (Paulist Press, 1998). He discusses the error in the
    translation of Romans 5:12, and how that influenced Augustine's views.
