I've suggested that the self sacrifice is present in all religions and that
the essence of personal religion is self discipline. Some of you may have seen
the story of the Dalai Lama's lament in the Times of London:
The Dalai Lama has admitted that in a lifetime of celibacy and nonviolence,
he has missed out on sex...
He was not sorry, however: "For monks and nuns, the practice of celibacy is
not just a rule. Our target is to try and reduce negative emotions. Sexual
attachment and desire are enjoyable, but act as a basis to anger, hatred and
jealousy.
