You know me well enough to know I don't agree with Tipler's take in that
paragraph. Indeed, I don't agree with the entire paragraph, which reminds me
of de Chardin's Omega state, which I never thought had legs. To me the best
way to deal with Tipler is his flatly false prediction:
"Fifth Testable Prediction of the Omega Point Theory: the density
parameter [Omega 0] of the universe must satisfy 4 x 10^-4< [Omega
0]-1< 4 x 10^-6, and Hubble's constant must be less than or equal
to 45 km/sec-mpc." ~ Frank J. Tipler, The Physics of Immortality,

As to Phil, he would probably try to define a wedge strategy to drive a
wedge between Tipler and Darwin. :-)
