The vote turned out overwhelmingly in favor of moderation. However,
many of the list old-timers preferred the more open unmoderated
style. I'm going to try an option that was suggested that I've been
using for a few days already. It looks like it will eliminate most of
the spam and as long as list members are "good" it will eliminate the
need for active moderation.
So I've turned on the option that allows only those who are members
of the list to post to the list. Others, spammers and those who
legimately post occasionally after reading the archives, will be
moderated. This cuts down significantly on the moderating demands and
allows for less restricted dialogue. The main group who is
inconvenienced are those who read the archives but who aren't
members. There will still be delays caused by moderation of your
posts, but hopefully I will be able to maintain a twice a day minimum.
It would be nice to be able to "moderate" "bad" listmembers. I think
I have figured out a way to do that. I may experiment on a few of you
who are more frequent posters.
