From Strong's Exhaustive Concordance and Hebrew dictionary
8435 Toledah
From H3205; (plural only) descent, that is, family; (figuratively)
history:--birth, generations.
I don't have my NIV Exhaustive Concordance with me, but if I remember
correctly it says nearly the same. It appears to me that the deciding
factor is if Toledah is to be understood literally or figuratively in
the Genesis texts. Since we have a precedence found in the clay tablets
where it is used figuratively, then it is entirely proper to do so in
Genesis.
