This is the Sunday in Pentecost when one of my favorite prayers appears as
the Sunday collect in Episcopal services. It was composed originally for
the first (1549) English Book of Common Prayer, and reflects the new
emphasis placed upon the Scriptures in the Reformation period. The prayer
reflects the language of Paul in Romans 15:4, where "learning" means
"instruction," and the phrase "by patience and comfort of..." is rendered in
the NRSV as "by steadfastness and the encouragement of..." Here is the
prayer in the traditional form. I trust all members of ASA would give a
    hearty Amen to it:

BLESSED LORD, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our
learning: Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and
inwardly digest them; that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may
embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou
hast given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
