The division of knowledge into different disciplines is perhaps somewhat
artificial, with a purpose rooted in convenience rather than reality, as
knowledge of all things seen and unseen is a seamless web of interrelated
facts and proofs.
I see analogies in the law and medicine, where specialist practitioners
regularly do damage by acting according to the dictates of their specific
area of expertise, while being unaware or ignorant of the effects their act
has on matters or conditions outside of their particular focus.
A rather blunt metaphor for this could be in Tom Lehrer's song about the
bomb, in which he quotes Werner von Braun as saying of the blitz and the
ICBM, "That's not my department."
