Mike and Jim seem to be somewhat upset at Joel's and others' request
that they take their discussion of numbers and chronology off-line.

May I remind everyone that it was perfectly appropriate for Joel to
have done this. If he believes that the topic is of limited interest
to all but a few group members then it is appropriate to ask that
such DISCUSSION be conducted in private exchanges. It would be
reasonable after some time for one of the participants in the private
discussion to summarize their conclusions for the group (if the topic
is appropriate for the list as a whole).

Those engaging in topics of limited interest should listen to the
group and respect the group's wishes and not simply suggest that
filters and delete keys are the only appropriate response.

I suggest that in the present situation (and perhaps in the future)
that when a member requests that a particular topic be taken off-list
that they politely give their reasons and that those who want to keep
it on-list politely say so and if the number of those who want to
keep it on are not more than three or four that they refrain from
    discussing this topic on-list.
