Hi Glenn,
I did my Ph.D. at the University of St.Andrews in the late
70s and early 80s, and although St.Andrews is not quite as
far north as Aberdeen, it's still north of Edinburgh, and I
noticed how late the sun set in summer. Because the sky
is so bright and it never gets really dark, local observational
astronomy is suspended, and the time is used to maintain
the telescopes at the University.
An additional problem in being so far north is that the rich
star fields in Scorpio and Sagittarius towards the galactic
centre are very low down in the south, and in a bright sky,
so they can never be seen to advantage.
In winter of course the days are very short and it can be quite
depressing, particularly if the sky is overcast, as it often is.
