    The versions tend to give good colloquial translations since people no longer
    believe the sky is solid. But, the Hebrew phrase "upon the face of" means the
    birds pass by in front of the firmament like the soldiers in 2Sam 15:18 pass
    by "upon the face of David," that is, in front of David who is facing them;
    and, to the observer writing the account the soldiers lie between the
    observer and the king, just as the birds lie between the observer and the
    firmament.
