Milky Way struck 100 million years ago, still rings like a bellAn international team of astronomers have discovered evidence that our Milky Way had an encounter with a small galaxy or massive dark matter structure perhaps as recently as 100 million years ago, and as a result of that encounter it is still ringing like a bell. Still capable of adapting: Research team studies genetic diversity of living fossilsThe morphology of coelacanths has not fundamentally changed since the Devonian age, that is, for about 400 million years. Nevertheless, these animals known as living fossils are able to genetically adapt to their environment. This is described by Dr. Kathrin Lampert from the RUB's Department of Animal Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity along with colleagues from Wuerzburg, Bremen, Kiel, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in the journal Current Biology. Huge hamsters and pint-sized porcupines thrive on islandsFrom miniature elephants to monster mice, and even Hobbit-sized humans, size changes in island animals are well-known to science. Biologists have long believed that large animals evolving on islands tend to get smaller, while small animals tend to get bigger, a generalization they call "the island rule."
