The ORU Chapter of the American Scientific Affiliation (ASA) is off to a great start this year after a lively and well-attended meeting on the evening of September 22^nd. Dr. Jacob Howland, Philosophy professor and former department chair at the University of Tulsa, gave an informative and provocative lecture titled “Cosmos and Philosophy in Plato and the Bible.” Student president of the ORU ASA chapter, Kyle Hansen, was instrumental in bringing Dr. Howland to speak after meeting him during a summer study-abroad in Jerusalem. About 75 students and faculty turned out to learn more about the relationships between ancient Greek and Hebrew thought. Dr. Howland did a wonderful job of communicating his research at a level which kept everyone engaged for over an hour. And almost no one left before the end of the extended question-and-answer session after the talk. Dr. Howland expressed his appreciation for this kind of organization (ASA) in bringing together multiple disciplines, and wished they had a similar emphasis at the University of Tulsa. He also said he would like to come back and speak in the future, and that he would recommend ORU as a venue in which some of his colleagues might like to interact.

Dr. Tom Gray, Pastor of The Kirk in Tulsa, OK will be presenting at the March ASA Meeting of the Oral Roberts University (ORU) chapter. He is an amateur astronomer and has a strong desire to see science and theology working together for the glory of God! March, 24th at 7:00pm in room GC 2114 at Oral Roberts University.

Welcome to the Oral Roberts University-ORU Chapter of the American Scientific Affiliation. I am Kyle Hansen, the student president of the ASA, under Dr. Dominic Halsmer, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering of ORU. We have had 3 meetings so far. In February we had three science, and three theology faculty members present on topics bringing together various issues in science and theology. In January we had Dr. Mark Hall, Professor of English at ORU and C.S. Lewis scholar present on "Presupposition and Scientific Methodology: A Critique of C.S. Lewis' Views on Christianity, Evolution, and Intelligent Design. In November we hosted Dr. Edward Decker from the Christian Counseling part of the College of Theology and Missions at ORU speak on "Measuring Spirituality?" In the prior month we hosted Dr. Halsmer present on Reverse Engineering the Universe. Our monthly meetings usually allow for an hour of presentation, and a following hour of Q& A, and open discussion!
