ASA STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION 2012 

 

 

Thank you for your interest in the American Scientific Affiliation’s first annual student writing competition. The period for submission will open on December 1, 2011 and close on January 31, 2012.
 
We are accepting works of poetry (no longer than 200 lines), fiction, and creative nonfiction (no more than 1500 words) on the topic of science and faith.
 
Please read the contest rules below.

 

 

Eligibility:
 

Must be a student working toward a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree with an interest in increasing the dialogue between science and faith. Entrants need not be residents of the United States, but all entries must be submitted in English.
No part of the material you submit may be previously published, and all of the work must be your own. No collaborations are allowed for this contest.

 

How to Submit:
           

Visit this website after December 1, 2011 and fill out the required form and upload your documents (you may have up to two entries in each category). All entries must have a COVER PAGE that contains the following information:

 

  • Your Name
     
  • The Title of Your Piece
     
  • Category (fiction, nonfiction, or poetry)
     
  • Your School
     
  • Your Year of Study (freshman, sophomore, grad student, etc.)

 

Your Name MAY NOT APPEAR on any subsequent pages.

Please do not use fonts larger than 12 pt and keep margins below one inch. Please double space all prose.
 
Poetry may be up to 200 lines in length. Fiction and creative nonfiction may not exceed 1500 words.
 
Entries must be received by midnight on January 31, 2012.
 

Judging:
 

Judging will take place throughout the month of February. All entries will be evaluated on the basis of content, language, effect, and integrity. Whichever submission our panel of judges deems the best, most thought-provoking and emotionally mature piece of writing will receive the Grand Prize of $200. Three $50 Runner-up Prizes in each category will also be selected from among the entries and published in God and Nature News.
 
You will be notified by March 10, 2012 if your submission is selected by our judges.
 

The Fine Print:


You retain the copyright to your work, but ASA reserves the right to print, reprint, and distribute all submitted entries, regardless of whether they are prize-winning pieces. Winning entries will be published in the ASA’s forthcoming “news and views” magazine, God and Nature News.
