Interesting summary, Brian.
We can pair similarities of structure & function three ways:
1) Similar structure + similar function
2) Similar structure + different function
3) Different structure + similar function

Current "interventionist" explanations:
for #1 - Common designer
for #2 - Display of divine creativity
for #3 - Display of divine creativity

AFAIK, ID principles have not yet been connected to any positive
statements about the hierarchical patterns generally exhibited
by life. And developing such explanations will no easy task.
Where evolutionary explanations are at least potentially bounded
by the existence of physical constraints, divine explanations
are not. If a creator can produce practically anything de novo,
then it's hard to understand why it chose any particular
design over another.
