Loren,

Thank you for your informative posting of Wed, 14 Oct.

In your discussion of SETI criteria you summarized as follows: "Taken
together...a highly recognizable pattern, a clear pay-off, and a low
probability of being produced naturally provide a very strong argument
for 'specification' and 'design'."

It occurs to me that these tests might be usefully directed to assess
the significance of the numerical phenomena attending the opening words
of the Bible. You are probably already aware of the Hebrew scheme of
alphabetic numeration dating from c.200 BC. Reading the 7 words of
Genesis 1:1 as numbers, we obtain:

{ 913, 203, 86, 401, 395, 407, 296 }.............................(i)

Now, regarding pattern:

1. The verse value (i.e. the sum of these 7) = 2701 = 37 x 73 = 73rd
triangular number - the outline of this triangle being 6 x 6 x 6.

2. "...and the earth". (i.e. the sum of the 6th and 7th)= 703 = 19 x 37
= 37th triangular number.

3. These numerical geometries are coordinated in that the second (when
inverted) may be perfectly inscribed within the first thereby dividing
the remainder of the figure into a trio of 666's; 666 = 18 x 37 = 36th
triangular number (unique, because each of its attributes is a
triangular number).

4. Writing (i) modulo 100 (i.e. the square of 10: universal radix and
collective unit in our systems of metrication and decimalization) we
obtain:

{ 13, 3, -14, 1, -5, 7, -4 }...............................(ii)

and we find the set clustered around multiples of 100 within a band of
width 27.

5. Writing (i) modulo 37 (a number that exists uniquely as numerical
hexagon, hexagram, and octagon with a total of 16 axes of symmetry) we
obtain:

{ -12, 18, 12, -6, -12, 0, 0} ................................(iii)

It follows from this analysis that 23 of the possible 127 combinations
of the original values are multiples of 37, i.e. nearly 7 times the
number expected in a truly random set. We also observe that each of the
values in (iii) is a multiple of 6.

6. Further interest - in particular, geometries compatible with those
described above - appear in Genesis 1:2. Here are its 14 word values:

{302,420,411,19,334,100,140,451,220,86,728,100,140,95}..............(iv)

Observe: (a) The first of these meets specifications 4. and 5. above.
(b) The first 8 words of Genesis total 3003, i.e. 77th triangular
number.
(c) The sequence of 5 words beginning at word 4 of Genesis totals 1801,
i.e. 25th numerical hexagon which fits perfectly within the 73rd
triangle and perfectly embraces the 37th.
(d) The sequence of 7 words beginning at word 9 of Genesis totals 1875,
i.e. a trio of rhombi - each of value 625 = 25 x 25 - which can be
fitted perfectly within the 73rd triangle, their inner vertices
overlapping at its centroid.
(e) The remaining 6 words of Genesis 1:2 (i.e. from the 16th of Genesis
to the 21st) generate 1369, or 37 x 37. As a rhombus, this figure also
fits the 73rd triangle perfectly.

And, regarding probability:

Clearly, the features described above cannot reasonably be attributed to
chance. This conclusion is further borne out by the fact that they
centre around the highly strategic and powerful assertion, Genesis 1:1.
Further, in addition to the coordinated geometries (predicated on the
uniquely figurate number 37) there are symbolic elements which establish
strong links with the wider body of Scripture. While it is difficult, in
this rich context, to quantify statistical probability it may be noted
that a consideration of items 4. and 5.alone lead to odds exceeding one
hundred million to one against!

And, finally, pay-off:

It is not difficult to argue that the Author of these phenomena is our
Creator and Saviour, Jesus Christ. In my reply (Sun 6 Sep) to James
Anderson's posting of Thu 3 Sep - I floated 'A Theory of Divine Intent',
suggesting that it was reasonable to believe that the numbers underlying
the words of Genesis 1:1 are expressly provided to strengthen the faith
of the believer, and - perhaps more to the point - to convince the
unbeliever.

The search for extraterrestial life forms has focussed man's attention
on the peculiar problems attending such an exercise. It would appear
that the Lord has now intervened in a decisive manner: man's intellect
can now lead him to Truth - provided he (man) will allow it!

I would appreciate your comments.
