I'd argue, John, that the principle itself has become more clear since
the enlightenment, but that MN itself goes back at least to the times of
the Epicureans., when they (Epicurious?) wrote "ascribe nothing to the
gods" as one of his two "rules" of investigating nature (the other was
"consider ALL the evidence."
