In anthropology a 1977 source is woefully out of date. New datings with new
techniques are showing that Neanderthal and anatomically modern humans,
co-existed in the Middle east for 40,000 years. See Stringer and Gamble _In
Search of the Neanderthals_, 1993, p. 103. And I might add that Gooch has a
nice imagination.

The Neanderthals of Amud date to 50,000 years and modern man at Qafzeh dates
to 92,000 years. This hardly sounds like the gleeful rape, pillage and plunder
that your out of date source implies. If the Neanderthal were able to hold
the "Cromagnons" at bay for 42,000 years, I would say they were pretty good
fighters.
