This is a good question. The answer is quite elusive in my reference
materials. In Strong's, the Hebrew word for "Kind" (miyn), pronounced
meen, is defined simply as "to portion out; a sort, i.e. a species". I
doubt that this means a taxanomic species but a more general term
implying a kind, variety, or type as the word is used elsewhere in the
Old Testament in other contexts.

I agree, it is the Hebrew meaning of the phrase "after their kind" that
we need to explore.
