In Dick Keyes' book HEROES (Navpress, 1995), he postulates four
specific writers as having become the focal point of modernist damage
to Christianity:

Darwin

Freud

Nietzsche

Marx

Marx and Freud considered THEMSELVES to be "scientific."

Keyes has a whole chapter in which he explicates this theory.
Fascinating reading. Recommended.
