To the group:

The computer center has failed to fix the archiving program so I have set
up my own. I think that it is a superior method anyway. It is a program
called hypermail. It converts a unix mail file to a hyperlinked directory
in html. It prepares author, thread, and date indices. (Those of you who
are prolific might like to see how many entries there are under your name.)
This present archive goes back to May. Unlike the previous archive this
one is updated only occasionally. I will try to arrange it so that it
updates it at least daily.

For those with the expertise in html, hypermail will read html so if you
bracket parts of your post with <html> and </html> the archived post will
contain html formatting and active links. Also active are mailto: and www
URL's in your signatures if you have them.

I think that this is a very nice archiver and plan to index it more
thoroughly with swish or some other indexer so that we can search the
archive topically as well. I also plan to include pre-May parts of the
archive at some point.

The index is quite large and is likely to tax the memory allocated to your
browser. I will probably break it up into quarterly installments, but am
too busy to do that just now. When sorted by date or thread more recent
posts appear at the top so even if you run out of memory you will have the
most recent stuff more immediately accessible.

The url for the index is http://www.calvin.edu/~grayt/mailevolution. When
I get to it I will edit my home page (http://www.calvin.edu/~grayt/) so
that it links to this new archive index.

Tell me what you think and if you have any suggestions. (Privately works
best, so we don't clutter up the discussion with administrative trivia.)
