For a different view of the subject of consciousness, take a look at Roger
Penrose' book, "The Shadows of the Mind". Penrose rejects the view that
mind is just computation. However, he is confident that a scientific
theory of consciousness can be developed. The first half of the book
(which I have read) aims to establish that conscous cannot be modeled as
computation. His reasoning relies heavily on Turing machine proofs, and
bears some relation to Goedel's reasoning leading to the Incompleteness
theorem.

The second half (which I have not read yet) outlines his views of what a
scientific theory of consciousness might be.
